Scoring and Guidelines for 2009/2010 Montrail Ultra Cup
Guidelines:
Runners must register online at ultracup.montrail.com before any points will be awarded. Registration must take place within two weeks of the completion of your first Montrail Ultra Cup race, in order to receive points for that race.
After registration, Montrail will automatically track your finishes for the season and will post updated standings two weeks after each race on the Montrail blog.
Series is made up of 11 total races (14 total events (some races have multiple distances)), with Western States as the series finale. The series covers 4 distances: 50k, 50 mile, 100k, and 100 mile. Western States 100 is no longer a mandatory race in order to compete for the Cup, but it will continue to count for more points.
50k - 5 races, each worth a maximum of 31 points
50 mile - 5 races, each worth max of 50 points
100k - 3 races, each worth max of 62 points
100 mile - 1 race (finale), worth a max of 100 points
Scoring:
Scores will be separated into male and female standings. Scoring will be weighted, so the longer the race, the more points you'll receive. Scoring will also be based on your time, compared to the winning time.
Winners Time (minutes) x max points available
Your Time (minutes)
So, if you finish a 50 mile race in 9:32:27, we'll round to the nearest minute, so you'd have a 9:32. The winner finishes in 7:10 and receives 50 points. So, your score is:
430 minutes (winners time) x 50 points = 37.587 points
572 minutes (your time)
Your series score will be the sum of up to your 4 best scores. You will be counted as a series participant and your score will make you eligible for the Ultra Cup if you compete in at least 2 races.
Western States 100 Automatic Qualifier Guidelines:
Automatic entry into Western States 100 will be given to the top two men and women finishers from each race, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE 50k DISTANCE. No Automatic Entry into WS100 can be earned at a 50k distance, but these races will still count for Ultra Cup points.
When a Western States qualifying opportunity is earned by an individual and that individual subsequently chooses not to accept the entry, or is already entered, the entry will not roll down to lower-placed finishers, but will expire in that remaining event.
Each Top Two Winner must deliver his/her Western States 100 entry packet to the Western States 100 office within two weeks of completion of the event that qualifies him/her for automatic entry. Entry packets must include (1) a completed entry form, available by request from the Race Director at wser100@comcast.net or (916) 387-8796, (2) payment of the entry fee, and (3) completion of the eight-hour service requirement form, available at www.ws100.com/serviceform.pdf.
Awards:
Ultra Cup series overall awards will go out to the top 5 men and women, upon completion of the series. Top 3 men and women will receive a cash/product combination, while 4th and 5th place will receive product packages.
Participant prizes will be awarded to those who finish at least 2 races.
