Scoring and Guidelines for the 2012/13 Montrail Ultra Cup

Guidelines:

Runners must register online at ultracup.montrail.com before any points will be awarded. Registration must take place within two weeks of the completion of your first Montrail Ultra Cup race, in order to receive points for that race.

After registration, Montrail will automatically track your finishes for the season and will post updated standings two weeks after each race on the Montrail blog.

50k - 4 races worth 31 points

50 mile - 5 races worth 50 points

100k - 2 races worth 62 points

100 mile - 3 races worth 100 points

Scoring:

Scores will be separated into male and female standings. Scoring will be weighted, so the longer the race, the more points you'll receive. Scoring will also be based on your time, compared to the winning time. Bonus points will be awarded for winning a race. Update: the male and female winner will receive 10 bonus points for a 1st place finish. Second place male and female will receive 5 points. Third place male and female will receive 3 points. The winner of a 50km race ends up with 41 points, the winner of a 50 mile race ends up with 60 points, the winner of a 100km race receives 72 points, and the winner of a 100 mile race receives 110 points. New for the 2012/2013 season: Each distance will only be scored once.

Winners Time (minutes)     x     max points available
Your Time (minutes)

So, if you finish a 50 mile race in 9:32:27, we'll round to the nearest minute, so you'd have a 9:32. The winner finishes in 7:10. So, your score is:

430 minutes (winners time)     x     50 points = 37.587 points
572 minutes (your time)

Your series score will your best result from each race distance, with a possibility of 4 total scores. You will be counted as a series participant and your score will make you eligible for the Ultra Cup if you compete in at least 2 races.

Western States 100 Automatic Qualifier Guidelines:

Automatic entry into Western States 100 will be given to the top two men and women finishers from each race, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE 50k DISTANCE. No Automatic Entry into WS100 can be earned at a 50k distance, but these races will still count for Ultra Cup points.

For Montrail Ultra Cup races that are longer than 50K, if either the first or second place finisher is already entered in Western States 100, then the third place finisher will receive the automatic entry offer. If neither first nor second is in Western States 100 and decides not to run it, there is no sliding to third. The automatic entry will not slide down further than third place.

Each Top Two Winner must deliver his/her Western States 100 entry packet to the Western States 100 office within two weeks of completion of the event that qualifies him/her for automatic entry. Entry packets must include (1) a completed entry form, available by request from the Race Director at wser100@comcast.net or (916) 387-8796, (2) payment of the entry fee, and (3) completion of the eight-hour service requirement form, available at www.ws100.com/serviceform.pdf.
